WAYNE L. SLATER
May 14, 1930 – November 15, 2021
ELKHART- Wayne L. Slater, 91, of Elkhart, died Monday November 15, 2021, at his residence in Elkhart. He was born May 14, 1930, in Edgerton, Ohio to Clayton L. and Lewellen (Davis) Slater.
On February 4, 1950, he married Martha C. Ott. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2005. Surviving are 4 children, Linda (Stanley) Neely, Susan Hunt, Lynn Rush, Michael (Desiree) Slater all of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Howard (Janet) Slater of Shipshewana, IN and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Martha and a sister, Marian L. Haase.
Wayne served in the US Air Force from 1948-1950 and received an honorable discharge. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the George Washington Masonic Lodge #325 in Bristol, the Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, the Mizpah Shrine, OES Chapter #273 in Bristol, and a life member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge #599. He enjoyed woodworking and making small wooden objects. Wayne retired in 1979 from Conrail as an engineer.
Funeral services for Wayne will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday November 18, 2021, at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. A masonic memorial service will take place. The service will be rendered by Chaplain Arnell McCoy with Heartland Hospice and burial will follow in Rice Cemetery where there will be full military honors rendered.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Elkhart County Humane Society or the Second Chance Small Dog Rescue of Elkhart.
