Richard Whetzel Sr. Obituary

RICHARD LYNN WHETZEL, SR.

May 27, 1951 – July 6, 2020

ELKHART- Richard Lynn Whetzel, Sr., 69, of Elkhart, passed away Monday July 6, 2020 at his home.  He was born May 27, 1951 in Bethesda, Maryland to Louis & Myrtle Edna (Dove) Whetzel. He married Barbara Ann Root, surviving is their child Richard (Jill) Whetzel Jr. of Bradford, England. They divorced, and he married Regina Kay Bass, surviving is their child, Theresa J. (Sandro) Flores of Elkhart.

On June 5, 1987 in Elkhart he married Cynthia Ellen Taylor.  She survives along with their children,  Leo Smith, Jr., of Elkhart, Brandon (Lora)  Himes of Bristol, Mandy (Kyle Forrester) Himes of Elkhart, Andrew Himes of Bristol; 11 grandchildren, Amber Whetzel, Samantha Flores, Kevin Himes, TaLia Flores, Carrie Forrester, Jaelen Himes, Lynkin Himes, Anthony Forrester, Kristofer Himes, Kenzleigh Flores and Dani Rae Himes.  Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Kitty Lou Hoyle.  He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister and a grandson.

Richard enjoyed fishing and hunting and worked as driver in the van conversion industry, he enjoyed the most being with his grandchildren,”chillin like a villian!”, or “hangin out like wet laundry!” Grandchildren met the most to him and always put a smile on his face, making life good.  He went through colon cancer twice and was grateful for life every day given to him.  He was a giving person and never new a stranger.  If you need something and he could help he would, not expecting anything in return.  It is the right thing to do.  He lived with Theresa and Sondro for the last 25 years of his life.    In keeping with his wish’s cremation will take place and a celebration of life service will be held at a later date.  Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral home is entrusted with his care.
