PHYLLIS JEAN LAIRD June 1, 1939-May 30, 2019 ELKHART- Phyllis Jean Laird, 79, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday May 30, 2019 at her home. She was born June 1, 1939 in Constantine, Michigan to Bruce & Lavonne (Spencer) Sassaman. On June 26, 1955 in Elkhart she married Gerald Dale Laird. He preceded her in death on March 14, 2005 in Elkhart. Surviving are 2 children, Cynthia L. (Ed) Heiman of Elkhart, Ricky D. (Arie) Laird of Gulfport, Mississippi; 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and brother, Gerald (Toke) Sassaman of Elkhart. Also surviving is a brother-in-law, Jim Laird and his family of Elkhart and a sister-in-law, Judy (J.D.) Garner of New Paris, IN. Along with her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Kenneth E. Sassaman and a son-in-law, Robert W. "Rob" Sanders. Phyllis graduated from Memorial High School in 2011 at the age of 72. She was a member of the Red Hat Club and she enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and spending time at the drag strip watching her grandchildren drag race. She retired in 2000 from the Trust Department at Key Bank and most recently was a homemaker. Funeral services for Phyllis will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday June 4, 2019 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Pastor Rick Pirtle from the Riverview General Baptist Church will preside and burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Viewing for family and friends will be 2 hours prior to the service.
