Maxine E. Hammontree

March 8, 1936-May 18, 2026

ELKHART-Maxine E. Hammontree, 90, passed away May 18, 2026 at Greenleaf Health Campus.  She was born March 8, 1936, in Gary, South Dakota. 

  On February 18, 1955 in Cassopolis, Michigan she married Lewis Hammontree Sr.; he preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, Peter & Mildred (Gustafson) Engeseth.

  Surviving are 3 sons, Lewis (Jeanette) Hammontree, Jr., Scott (Jayne) Hammontree, Dean (Marian) Hammontree, 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.  Also surviving are 5 siblings, Emmeth, Darlene, Donna, Patty, Mary and many nieces and nephews.

  Maxine graduated from Cassopolis High School in 1954 and was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge.  She loved traveling, crocheting, and playing bingo.  Maxine was a social butterfly that enjoyed square dancing in her younger years, and spending winters in Bonita Springs with her husband; where they made many friends.

  Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the 1 p.m. memorial service Thursday, May 21, 2026 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will be held at a later date in Adamsville Cemetery.

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Caring Cove Hospice.
