Marjorie Ann Eger

January 14, 1934 ~ April 28, 2022 (age 88)

Marjorie Ann (Hovey) Eger, 88, died on April 28, 2022, at Hubbard Hill Healthcare Center.  She was born January 14, 1934, in Hammond, Indiana.

Marjorie graduated cum laude from Butler University where she was a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Phi Kappa Psi scholastic honoraries and Alpha Chi Omega sorority.  She was a private flute instructor for 60 years as well as played flute in the Elkhart County Symphony and the Elkhart Municipal Band.  In addition, she worked for the Elkhart Truth where she was a music critic, a Lifestyle Reporter and wrote the very popular “Vittles” food section for many years.  She was an excellent cook, an avid reader and enjoyed writing and reciting poetry.  Marj loved to cheer on the Butler Bulldogs during basketball season and could frequently be heard yelling “Go Dawgs”!  Inspired by her husband, she began running races as well as became the track announcer for the Memorial High School boys track and field team for over 15 years.  She loved cats and was devoted to every furry friend that became part of her family.

Marjorie leaves behind her husband of 41 years, James Eger; her daughter Leslie Brown and husband Bob; her son-in-law Chris Howard; her step-children Tonda Chin and husband Darrell, Shari Casaburo and husband Jim, Michael Eger and wife Connie; her grandchildren Emily, Julie, Spencer and Olivia; her step-grandchildren Ryan, Chase, Morgan, Gia, Trey and Michael; her step-great-grandson, Jamie; her sister Lois Schmoe and husband Wendall; her nephews Dave Schmoe and family and Doug Schmoe and family; and niece Jill VanGorden and family.

She is predeceased by her parents Nilo W. and Ruth E. (Sinden) Hovey and her daughter, Kimberly J. Howard.

She also leaves behind the flute students she loved and nurtured.  Her goal was to stay in touch with them all.  As Marj said, “When you hear music we played together, think of that music in your fingers and remember me as you play each note.”

A service and celebration of Marjorie’s life will be scheduled at Calvary United Methodist Church on June 18, 2022.  Family will greet guests starting at 9 am until the time of service at 11 am.  A private family burial will follow at Zion Cemetery in Bristol, Indiana.
