Lewis Merle Newell

Lewis Merle Newell, 57, of Elkhart passed away peacefully at Greenleaf Healthcare, in Elkhart on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Lewis was born at Elkhart General Hospital, December 11, 1960 to the late Merle Ray Newell, and the late Georgia Faith (Sleeper) Newell. Lewis was an only child. The family moved to Cassopolis, Michigan where Lewis graduated from Cassopolis Public Schools, June, 1979. After high school graduation Lewis worked in a variety of retail services including; Cook's Discount Store, Montgomery Ward (Concord Mall), Meijer, Ramada Inn, and Best Western. Later he started his own small engine repair business working from his parent's garage in Cassopolis, Michigan. After the passing of both his parents, Lewis moved to Carriage House Apartments on Burr Oak Street off of Pleasant Plain on the south side of Elkhart. After falling in his apartment breaking both legs, Lewis was treated at Elkhart General Hospital, and then went to a series of nursing homes-Valley View, Eastlake, Golden Living and Vannovi Assisted Living in Mishawaka, and finally Greenleaf Healthcare in Elkhart. Lewis appreciated so much the nurses and staff from the various health care facilities that helped him through the recent months and years as well as the hospice nurses. He especially named; Angie, Bob, Beth, Lindsey, Hilaree and Debbie. He also appreciated so much the Greenleaf Health Campus, Charlie Syer and his entire staff. Finally, Lewis especially wants to thank Robin Schweinzer, RN, a VIP Greenleaf nurse for her daily encouragement and close friendship during his last weeks of life. Lewis is survived by an uncle; Carl Sleeper from Elkhart County, two aunts; Laverne Newell of Elkhart, Mary Newell of Florida and 2 cousins; Ramona Newel and Sue West. Services will be held Monday, March 26, 2018 at 4 p.m. at the Belmont Mennonite Church, 915 Oxford Street, Elkhart, IN; where he was a member. Friends may visit with the family 1 hour prior to the services. Memorial contributions may be given to the church or Heartland Hospice.
