ELKHART- Larry L. Zilm, affectionately known as Whitey, Zip, and Mr. Z., age 86, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2022 at Goshen Hospital. 

  Larry was born November 24, 1935 in Kansas City, Missouri.  He grew up in Elkhart graduating from Elkhart Central High School.  After graduation he served in the military as a paratrooper during the Korean War.  When discharged he attended Indiana University and went on to marry Judi Wood on August 27, 1960.  Judi, also of Elkhart, survives along with daughter, Maria Zilm, and son, Todd Zilm.

  Larry remarried on October 6, 1989 to Linda West.  Linda, of Granger, survives along with two daughters, Nicole (Bill) Williamson and two children, and BreAnna Zilm.

  Larry started his own company, Action Lighting, in the 1970’s which introduced him to the RV business.  When he was not working, you would find him playing golf or on the practice range at the Elks or South Bend Country Clubs.  He savored the opportunity to play in golf tournaments and won several championships.  Whether it would be for the competitive aspect or pure enjoyment, watching him play was contagious. 

  After retiring from the RV business, he eagerly anticipated each morning meeting his breakfast buddies to discuss the news and exchange local “legendary” stories.  During the winter months, Larry would travel to Las Vegas for major sporting events with his friends, then on to Del Mar or Santa Anita for horse racing.  He would also spend time in Rancho Mirage, California playing golf and maintaining his active lifestyle. 

  Larry was very charismatic, so when traveling he never met a stranger with his sense of humor and interest in the lives of others.  Larry loved his children and was fond of spending time with them, critiquing their golf game and offering lessons on life.  

  Larry was preceded in death by his father, Harry Zilm and mother, Fern Zilm.  A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2022 at Rice Cemetery.   A celebration of his life will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Elcona Country Club.
