ELKHART-Joseph C. Huffman, 84, passed away July 26, 2020 at his home in Elkhart surrounded by family. He was born September 7, 1935 in Gas City, IN to Rollie & Mary (Ray) Huffman, Sr.
On July 23, 1955 in Elkhart at the Osolo Missionary Church he married Verna Tavernier; she preceded him in death on April 8, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 1 daughter, Judy Holaway, 5 siblings, Frank, Johnnie, James, and Freddie Huffman, and Eileen Fannin.
Surviving are 3 children, Marilyn (Michael) Schoen, Joseph (Connie) Huffman, Jr., Mark (Sheker) Huffman, 1 son-in-law, Ralph Holaway, 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 4 siblings, Margaret Buss, Clara Hartman, Rollie Huffman, Jr., and Robert Huffman.
Joseph served as the Assistant Street Commissioner for the City of Elkhart Street Department where he worked for over 42 years until his retirement in 1997. While there he received a Key to the City. He was a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge and enjoyed going to antique sales and traveling with Verna. In his later years he could often be seen feeding birds and squirrels from his front porch and watching Westerns. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2020 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery. Presiding will be Pastor Mark Johnson from Life Tabernacle Church.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Elkhart Humane Society or Multiple Sclerosis Society.
