Jessie B. Girten

ELKHART- Jessie B. Girten, 93, passed away April 20, 2018 at Greenleaf Living Center in Elkhart. She battled congestive heart failure for many years and just recently cancer. She was born June 21, 1924 in Elkhart, IN to Robert & Gladys (Sutley) Whitmer. On June 30, 1951 in Elkhart she married the love of her life David Girten,VII; he preceded her in death March 30, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents and 2 siblings; Irene Gertrude and Harold Robert (who died shortly after birth). Surviving are 3 step-sons; Charles Girten, David Girten, Jr., Dennis Girten, 2 nieces that are like daughters; Sandy (Robert) Thrapp, Patricia (Francis) Schoenherr, several step-grandchildren, 4 great-nieces and 1 great-nephew; Shellie Denning, Heidi Young, Jennifer Thomas, Robert Thrapp and Wendi Nelson. Also surviving are 2 step-great-nephews and 1 step-great-niece; Terry Schoenherr, Todd Schoenherr, Tracy McNeil, and numerous other family members. She will be remembered as a loving wife and the best aunt anyone could want. In 1943 she graduated from Elkhart High School and went on to work at Miles Lab for 42 years. She was a member of the Miles Quarter Century Club, Miles Union 12273 and Miles Retired Ladies. In her spare time she enjoyed volunteering at the Y.M.C.A. Senior Center, playing cards but hated loosing, crocheting, and bingo none of which surpassed her love of the Cubs. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the 11:00 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
