IONE A. BURKS

October 21, 1926 – July 31, 2020

ELKHART- Ione A. Burks, 93, of Elkhart, passed away Friday July 31, 2020 at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart.  She was born October 21, 1926 in Shady Grove, TN to Andrew & Bertha (Caldwell) Freeze.

     She married Cecil Burks on April 24, 1946 in Rossville, GA.  He preceded her in death on February 8, 2009.

Surviving is a grandson and his fiancé TJ Burks and Meredith Bishop of Elkhart; 5 great-grandchildren, Lonnie Ball, Daniel Ball, Johnathon Ball, Ethan Bishop and Gavin Burks; numerous nieces and nephews and her best friend of over 55 years, Murley Herdman.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil, 3 brothers, 5 sisters, a son, Timothy Burks Sr. and a grandson, Michael Burks.

     Ione was a member of the Women of the Moose and a member of the Elkhart Community Baptist Church.  She enjoyed sewing and going out to eat with her best friend Murley Herdman.  Ione was the owner of Burks Shoe Repair in Mishawaka for many years.

     Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday August 6, 2020 at the funeral home.  Pastor Ed Ritchie from the Elkhart Community Baptist Church will preside and entombment will follow at Chapel Hill memorial Gardens in Osceola.

     Memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Wounded Warriors Program.
