Helen M. Kauffman

Helen M. Kauffman, 94 passed away July 21, 2018 at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born October 23, 1923 in Elkhart to Clayton & Gladys (Ostrom) Martin. On April 6, 1947 in Elkhart she married Frank R. Kauffman; he preceded her in death on April 9, 1980. She was also preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Nina Martin, 4 siblings, Thomas Martin, Dora Morse, Joyce Strousborger and Della Kauffman. Surviving are 3 children, Thomas Kauffman, Sheila (Charles) Holmes, Kathleen (Ben Steely) Kauffman, 2 grandchildren, Pauline (Brian) Beal and Jennifer (Justin) King. Also surviving are 3 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Helen graduated from Elkhart High School in 1941 and was a member of the reunion committee. She was also a PTA president of Willowdale School, on the Elkhart County PTA Council and worked at Elkhart Cases for many years. Helen loved to travel and even said "There's a lot of the World out there and I want to see some of it". Living by those words she walked on the Great Wall of China, saw the Pyramids, and went to Greece, Asia and Europe. She also traveled the Alaska Highway to Anchorage and Fairbanks and also widely through the U.S. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed doing jig-saw puzzles. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the 12 noon funeral service Friday, July 27, 2018 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Presiding will be Pastor Char Harris-Allen from New Hope United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow at Carlton Cemetery.
