Mr. Harry Bates Jr., was born January 26, 1949, in Ripley, TN to Hattie Lena and Harry Bates Sr.

Harry was a hard worker from an early age going from working in the fields in Tennessee to the RV factory in Elkhart, IN. He worked in the RV industry for over 45yrs starting at Yellowstone and retiring from Forrest River.

When not working, Harry, affectionately known as “Wild Dog,” was the life the party for his family and friends. A party wasn’t a party until he walked in. He made an impression on everyone he encountered because he never met a stranger that did not become a friend.

Harry was blessed to have had a loving woman of God in his wife, Nettie “Chance” Bates, for 44yrs. She proceeded him in death on June 3, 2021.

Harry is survived by his children: a son, Harry Bates III of Elkhart, IN, four daughters Tara Conner of Elkhart, IN, LaShanda Bates of Mishawaka, IN, Aireus (Errol) Sherrod of Gary, IN, and Mosha Bates of Atlanta, GA. His grandchildren: Shartay Bates, Panae Conner, Jerry Davis, Zontrae’ Markham, Zion Bates, Zaviaon Harris, Carter Davis, and Angel Davis. Six great-grandchildren, Sisters: Monella (L.T.) Shaw and Alice Crumdey. Brothers: Earnie Payton, Earl T. Bates, Apostle Jessie Bates, and Joe Bates. One Goddaughter, Santana Love. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Harry was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, and ten sisters and brothers, and his favorite dog, Onyx Bates. 

Visitation will be Friday May 26, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Service following at 12:00 p.m. at the Open Gate Praise and Deliverance Church, 137 Division Street, Elkhart.  Pastor V. Wayne Malone will render the service and cremation will follow at Elkhart Cremation Services.
