Glenda (Bills) Hummel Obituary
Glenda (Bills) Hummel
Glenda (Bills) Hummel, 84, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, August 29, at 7:55 p.m., surrounded by her husband and daughter.
She was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Kenneth A. and Verna O. Newberry. Glenda was previously married to Deloy Bills from 1960 to 1978, who preceded her in death. On August 28, 1985, she married Steven Hummel, and the couple recently celebrated 40 years of marriage.
Glenda is survived by her husband, Steven Hummel; her daughter, Kim (Gene) Johnson; grandchildren, Kyle (Jenn) Johnson, Duke (Brittney) Johnson, and Ali (Thomas Card) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Deloy, Milam, Jett, Reeve, and Luca Johnson; and her siblings, Cathy (Dennis) Rivest of London, Ontario, Canada, and Valorie (Dwayne) Spratt of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, K. Wayne, Larry, Barry, and Robert Newberry.
A graduate of Goshen High School, Glenda worked at Miles Lab and retired from Durakool after 25 years of dedicated service. Following her retirement, she continued to serve the community at the Elkhart County Voter Registration office.
Glenda was a loving wife, mother, and “Glammaw” who cherished her family. She enjoyed being by her husband’s side whether working on the house, in the yard, on cars, or just watching movies. There was nothing she couldn’t do, including roofing and siding. She also enjoyed planting flowers, decorating, and shopping. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she supported them enthusiastically in their fine arts and sports endeavors throughout their years at Jimtown and Grace College. Known for her style, sophistication, and class, she stood tall at 5’10” and lived life with grace and determination.
She was also proud of her U.S. citizenship, taking the Oath of Allegiance at a naturalization ceremony in Indianapolis, IN on August 31, 2007. On the same day, a flag was flown over the United States Capitol in honor of Glenda becoming a U.S. Citizen.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to her doctors and the staff at The Center for Hospice Care for their compassionate care over the past two weeks.
