Gail C. Viers

Gail C. Viers, 68, passed away October 6, 2017 at his home in Elkhart. He was born April 19, 1949 in Grundy, VA to the late Roosevelt & Georgia (Keen) Viars. On August 5, 1989 in Elkhart he married Phyllis Sorg; she preceded him in death on January 24, 2016. He was also preceded in death by 2 sisters Bronte Mullins and Linda Viars. Surviving are 5 children; Michael (Kimberly) King of Elkhart, Tammy (Brian) Faubion of New Paris, Jeff (Camille) Boyer, Duane (Kim) Viers, and John (Claudia) Viers all of Elkhart, 11 grandchildren; Dakota King, Brittanie King, Kaitlyn King, Brian Faubion, Austin Faubion, Blake Boyer, Bryce Boyer, Brooke Boyer, Kyle Viers, Carter Viers and Charles Viers. Also surviving are 4 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters; Thelma Meade of Prestonsburg, KY and Rose Ann (Ronald) Allen of Elkhart from Grundy, VA. Gail graduated from Grundy Senior High School; where he was an All-Star football player and went on to become a proud U.S. Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War as a door gunner. In his spare time he enjoyed playing horseshoe, camping at Foxwood Hills, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the D.A.V., worked for the City of Elkhart for many years and also attended Grace Community Church. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2017 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home. Additional visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Prairie Street Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be given to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County or the Wounded Warrior Association.
