ELKHART – EVELYN SUE NAFE GUILEY

Mrs. Evelyn Sue Nafe Guiley, of Elkhart, the widow of Pastor Harlow H. Guiley, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at the spirited age of 98 ½.
                She was born at home in Kewanna, Indiana, on March 9, 1924, the daughter of the late Don & Edna Smith Nafe. She grew up helping in her parent’s grocery store business which she often shared fond memories about.  After graduating high-school, Sue left home to attend the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago where she studied music and worked as a waitress. At the age of 17 she met her future husband and on December 28, 1945, she united in marriage to Harlow Guiley, and together they enjoyed 60 years of marriage until his death in 2006.
                Mrs. Guiley was a supportive pastor’s wife for over 50 years. She served with her husband at the Berrien Center Bible Church in Michigan early in the marriage, then the Northside Baptist Church in Elkhart, which they founded in 1953, and later at the Calvary Baptist Church in Elkhart which they founded in 1992 and where she was still a member.
                Sue worked at Brookdale High School in Elkhart as a lunchroom monitor. She loved her children and grandchildren and would often tell her grandchildren that she had "Designer genes"!  She loved watching the Gaither’s homecoming videos, “playing” along with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, and if you stayed in her home, you knew that during the time those shows were on it was best to stay quiet and not block the view of the screen.
                Survivors include: five children, Dr. Terry Guiley (Barb), Pastor Scott Guiley (Jane), Pam Compson, Jan Benedek (Greg), and Celeste Mills (Ben); 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
                In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by: one son-in-law, Wes Compson; her siblings, Millicent Bentz, Eldonna Graffis, Peggy Stadtmiller, Bonnie Lausted, Annabel Shaffer, Marilyn Jo Nafe, & Dr. Don Nafe, Jr.
                A celebration of Sue’s life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 4, 2022, at the Northside Baptist Church, 53198 County Road 9, Elkhart, with Pastor Scott Guiley, Pastor Greg Benedek, Pastor Lee Compson, Pastor Carl Henry, and Pastor Tim Wesco officiating. Burial will follow in the Prairie Street Cemetery.
