Edward “Ed” S. Newman

June 27, 1952-October 8, 2025

ELKHART-Edward “Ed” S. Newman, 73, passed away October 8, 2025, at 8:02 p.m. at IU Health Indianapolis.  He was born June 27, 1952 in Elkhart, Indiana.

  Ed was a teacher for many schools throughout his career including Goshen College, Yavapai Community College, Mohave Community College, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, South Ripley Community Schools, Indiana Virtual Academy, Columbus East High School, and Central Middle School. 

   He graduated from Elkhart High School in 1970, was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1974, graduated from IUSB with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979, and received his M.A. from Ball State University in 1992.   In 1979 he was elected to the Elkhart City Council, Democrat State and National conventions and was later appointed to the Republican State convention.  In 1979 he was selected as an “Outstanding Young Man in America” and in 1980 to “Who’s Who in American Politics.  While working in the school system, he was a girl’s track coach for many years and received two nominee “Coach of the Year” Awards in 2001 and 2002.  He was a Hoosier Hills All-Conference Coach in 1999, 2001, and 2002.

  He was an intelligent and well-spoken man who enjoyed having conversations with others where everyone could share their opinions.  Edward liked to make others laugh and was a wonderful joke and storyteller. Additionally, he was a consultant for (ASL) American Sign Language for the movie “My Apologies, My Love” in 2024. 

  He was a wonderful example of a man, and an amazing husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Karen Vollmar, 3 daughters, Elizabeth (David) Carey, Tiffany (Jason) Phillips, Emilie Vollmar; a granddaughter, Anna, three siblings, Beverly Jamison, Ricky (Sally) Newman, and James (Mary) Newman, as well as several nieces and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor & Estelle (Fuller) Newman and a brother, David Newman.

  Per his wishes cremation will take place and a celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

  Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
