Doris Arlene Walters Obituary
Doris A. Walters
October 10, 1929-June 4, 2024
CASSOPOLIS-Doris Arlene Walters, better known as Dovey, Duffy, mom, grandma, and friend, passed on the 4th of June 2024 after 94 years of a full life. While any death is sorrowful, Doris’ loved ones wish to celebrate a life well-lived, surrounded by a close-knit family that was by her side until the end, friends of more than seven decades, and a supportive church community.
Doris was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana where she met her husband of 59 years, Fred. Together, they had three children (Danny [Sue], Peggy [Tim], and Andy [Trish]) and four grandchildren (Rachel [Josh], Reid, Lake, and Cole). The family has shared memories of travel, holidays, and most regularly, days at the lake. Doris was particularly fond of “the boys,” her three grandsons who she watched grow up from just down the gravel driveway at their home in Cassopolis, where Doris and Fred lived after leaving their longtime family home in Elkhart.
Living in the same community for more than nine decades led to truly lifelong friendships – from attending school dances and weddings to raising children to retiring and traveling, Doris (and Fred) knew these relationships were invaluable. Doris worked as a nurse for decades, and her desire to care for those around her extended beyond her profession. She cherished her perfectly weeded garden, second only to her Three Kings collection. An animal lover, you could always find Doris with a cat curled up on her lap or a dog begging at her feet for a homemade treat. Cooking and baking brought Doris great joy as it was impetus to bring together family and friends and spoil everyone with any number of her infamous cookie recipes, particularly around the holidays and church fundraisers where she created hundreds of dozens of sweet delectables to perfection.
Reliable, selfless, and a witty storyteller of memories from a fulfilled life, it feels needless to write what we all know: Doris will be missed. But, those of us reading this brief summary that can only capture glimpses of a long life are lucky to have her in our memory.
Her family invites anyone who knows Doris to join them from 10:00-11:00am on Monday, June 10, 2024, for a visitation, followed by a service beginning at 11:00am at Creekside Church of the Brethren. During the visitation cookie and refreshments will be served. Following the service Doris will be buried next to Fred at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be given to the church.
