DAVID CHARLES STENBERG

October 29, 1942 – March 27, 2021

ELKHART- David Charles Stenberg, 78, of Elkhart died Saturday March 27, 2021 at his residence.  He was born October 29, 1942 in Elkhart, Indiana to Daniel T. and Dorothy (Osborne) Stenberg.

He married his best friend Ellen “Cookie” Latimer on December 5, 1964 and they spent 56 wonderful years together.  His wife “Cookie” survives along with several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Danny K. Stenberg and a nephew.

David graduated in 1960 from Elkhart High School and he served in the US Army Reserves from 1964 – 1970.   David worked at Vincent Bach in Elkhart for 34 years and retired in 1997.  He was life member of the Elkhart Elks Lodge #425, DAV Chapter #19, the Elkhart Moose Lodge #599, and the American Legion Post #143.  David was a Big Brother for 7 years and he enjoyed time spent with his little brother.

In his younger years, Dave enjoyed fishing and boating with his father, he managed a softball team, enjoyed drag racing and bowling.  His favorite sport was sailing and harbor hopping on Lake Michigan and across to Wisconsin.  His favorite trip was sailing to and under the Mackinaw bridge.  Dave and “Cookie” loved to travel and explore new places, covering most of the 50 states and many of the National Parks.

Dave was a volunteer at the Learner Theater, the Wellfield Botanic Gardens, the DAV, and wherever he could help a fellow veteran.  He was known for his cooking skills, which he shared with his family and friends.  His love and concern for others was a great asset and he touched many lives along the way.  His favorite saying was “Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.”

In his later years, his rare muscular disease prohibited his participation in many things, but he was always supporting everyone in spirit.  The family would like to extend a special THANK YOU to all his friends and care givers for their love and support.

Funeral services for David will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday March 31, 2021 at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home.  Pastor Dan Forehand and  Sister Nora Frost from the Grace Lutheran Church of which David was a member will preside and burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens where there will be full military honors rendered.  Friends may visit with the family for 2 hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
