CHARLES JAY GONYON, SR.
December 19, 1949 – August 4, 2021
ELKHART- Charles Jay Gonyon, Sr., 71, of Elkhart, died Wednesday August 4, 2021, at his residence in Elkhart with his loving wife Carol by his side. He was born December 19, 1949, in Frankfort, Michigan to Kenneth Gonyon and Virginia Gonyon. He was a graduate of Frankfort High School, Class of 1968, before moving to Indiana.
On September 26, 1992, he married Carolyn L. “Carol” Kauffman, she survives. Also surviving are four sons, Terry(Desiree) Gonyon Fountain MI, Charles Jr. (Stacy) Gonyon of Elkhart, Kenneth Gonyon of Elkhart, Chris Kern of Elkhart, One daughter Cheryl Morrison (Paul) of Granger. 16 grandchildren, Sara, Autumn, Jonathan, Chrystal, Allison, Michael, Kyle, Aedily, Breana, Tylar, Gabriel, Zachary, Haylee, Dakota, Brady, and Katie. Charles is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are, Kenneth Gonyon, Sandy Gill, Jeannie Knudsen, John Campbell, Tom Campbell (Minda), Homer Campbell, Ken Campbell, Ruth Faris, Susie Campbell, Margene Campbell, Debbie campbell in MI, and Ron (Sue) Kauffmann in TN, also many nieces and nephews.
Charles was employed as a forklift operator in the shipping department at Welch Packaging in Elkhart. He worked at Elkhart General Hospital for 10 years and earned many awards including employee of the year. He retired in 2015 from Elkhart General. He also worked at Welch Packaging from 2005-2008, then later returned in 2011 where he was presently working at the time of his passing. He enjoyed traveling, visiting lighthouses, and camping. He was well known as a hard worker, a legacy he left with his children and grandchildren.
In keeping with his wishes cremation will take place. A celebration of life service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 28,2021 at 3PM with Pastor John Hogsett officiating. Family will be available 15 minutes before the service to visit with friends. The church is located at 22045 CR 18 Goshen IN, 46516. Charles will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
