GOSHEN- Karen S. (Heffner) Douwsma, 69, of Goshen, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at her residence. She was born October 9, 1947 in Elkhart to George F. and Senora I. (Neff) Heffner. On May 9, 1969 she married the late Bernard J. Douwsma in Goshen. He preceded her in death on December 21, 1980. Survivors include her son, Timothy J. (Stephanie) Douwsma of Goshen; daughter, Lori (Michael) Bieganski of Goshen; brother, Randy A. Heffner of Orland; 4 grandchildren, Cooper Douwsma of Goshen, Kyle Bieganski of South Bend, Olivia Bieganski of Goshen and Lillian Bieganski of Goshen. Karen was a graduate of Concord High School. She was employed with the city of Elkhart as an accounts receivable specialist for several years prior to her retirement in 2016. She was a member of Crossroads Community Church and the Goshen VFW Post 985 Women's Auxiliary. Karen had many family and friends that she loved and cherished. Her favorite things to do were to spend time eating out with her family, attending the Elkhart County fair and attending her grandkids' sporting and 4H Llama club events. She enjoyed country music and had many line dancing friends. She also volunteered in the nursery at Crossroads Community Church and loved holding the babies. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 20th and 1 hour prior to the 1:00 PM funeral service on Friday, July 21st at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, 700 E. Jackson Blvd., Elkhart. Dr. Marc Royer will officiate. Interment will follow in Rice Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice Care in memory of Karen.
