Douglas H. Burt

Douglas H. Burt, 68, of Vandalia, MI, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2017. He was born April 29, 1949 in Elkhart to John & Beverly ((Sanford) Burt. On Nov. 26, 1969 in Elkhart he married Jana D. Higgins. She survives along with 2 children, Jennifer Burt of Elkhart and Michael (Brandy) Burt of Vandalia, MI; 2 grandchildren, Hunter Sites and Alex Hibshman; a great-granddaughter, Harper Reid Sites and his mother, Beverly Burt of Mishawaka. Also surviving are 3 sisters, Jon (Cindy) Hillman of Elkhart, Susan (Joseph) Schmidt of Grosse Point, MI., Teri (Mathew) Martin of Elkhart and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father John Burt. Doug graduated in 1967 from Elkhart High School and attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. He was a member of the Elkhart County Bass Masters for many years, enjoyed bird hunting and fishing, listening to music and was an avid Chicago White Sox and Green Bay Packers fan. Doug dearly loved his two dogs, Lily and Piper. He also coached little league baseball and softball for many years. Doug was the owner of Harnish Painting Company in Elkhart. In keeping with his wishes cremation will take place a celebration of life service will be held at a later date. Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home is entrusted with his care.
